How to play mahjong solitaire
Mahjong solitaire is a one-player matching game. It uses the tiles from the classic Chinese game, but the rules are much simpler. You don't need to know regular mahjong.
The goal
Remove every tile from the board by matching them in pairs.
The rules
- Tap two matching tiles to remove them.
- You can only pick a "free" tile. A tile is free when nothing sits on top of it and its left side or right side is open.
- Tiles that can't be picked yet look a little darker. If you tap one, the game tells you it's blocked.
- Keep matching until the board is empty.
What counts as a match
Two tiles match when they are exactly the same. Same picture, same number.
| Numbered tiles (dots, bamboo, characters) | Same suit and same number. The number is shown in a small badge on each tile. |
| Winds and dragons | Exactly the same tile. |
| Flower tiles (plum, lotus, sunflower and more) | The same flower only. A lotus matches a lotus. |
If you get stuck
- Hint shows you a pair you can take.
- Undo takes back your last move.
- Shuffle mixes the remaining tiles into new spots.
Every board in Calm Mahjong is built so it can be solved. There is no way to lose. Take your time.
Tips
- Clear tiles from the top of tall stacks first. They block the most tiles underneath.
- Work on the long rows from the ends.
- If four matching tiles are free, it usually doesn't matter which two you take. If only three are free, think before you choose.
